Is this a juvenile Sharp-Shinned Hawk? The bird in the photo was not much bigger than the Blue Jays it was unsuccessfully trying to catch. The photo was taken in October of 2019.You must be logged in to reply to this topic.

If it was really the size of a blue jay, it was probably a juvenile Sharp-shinned Hawk. If it was the size of a crow, it was more likely a juvenile Cooper's Hawk. The size ranges of the two species do overlap a bit, so it is difficult to say for sure from this photo.

It is a Cooper´s Hawk. It is easily mistaken with the Sharp-Shinned Hawk.
