      Citizen science and inquiry-based learning both tend to be hands-on, engaging, and fun for students. There are many practices that boost student learning and engagement in citizen science and inquiry that you’ve learned about so far. Which practices or approaches do you feel will be most important in your setting?

      I would like to include a wonder board in the beginning of my investigations.  Reading many of these inquiry practices has made me realize that many of my labs have been too guided to start and that students could provide that initial push themselves making the process more inquiry based.  In general I would like to move my inquiry activities to more of an open structure.  I also would like to incorporate a citizen science project in my class and use the 3 practices from UC Davis when implementing the citizen science.

      The majority of my lessons are designed for students to build their own knowledge and come to their own conclusions using myself as a guide. Since my students are used to this method of learning, I feel that I could use this to perform some citizen science projects in my classes. For the younger students, I would like to give them some questions to consider, then have them develop some hypothesis and collect. We could then summarize this data and put it into a larger context and how this could be used by a larger body of scientists. For the older students, I would like to incorporate the "I wonder" board to generate questions as they learn more about scientific investigations. I feel the younger students could benefit from the "I Wonder" board, but in terms of room in the curriculum, it would fit very well with my upper-classmen.

      I was not feeling like doing this this evening. It has been a hectic week of learning new teaching on line skills, so I have been kind of avoiding this as more on line did not appeal. I just re read the Science Investigations and Dev... article and am feeling inspired. The data is there and the real world examples made me realize that I could try a variety of things with just a few tweaks. I want my students to make good observations and to have this be real scientific data will be a bonus. It this school year I had a few monarch caterpillars in class which we released. The students were fascinated by them. I even had one student form the self contained classroom sneaking out of class to see the caterpillars. Trading about the Monarch Larvae Monitoring Project would be a good fit for me. I think I'll do the on line training and try it out.   As stress reduction I hav been taking walks each day and e-birding. I think I could take lead students on this... my failed feeder watch try of last year  had put me off birds... but maybe an approach of us going to the birds instead of them coming to us would be the way to go.

      I feel like I do many of the Science and Engineering Practices in isolation.  I focus on the SEP for the standard first and foremost.  Then, daily, I post which SEP we are using.  What I do not do is what is on p.16 which is putting the whole process together explicitly for one larger investigation.  For example, with the Medical Mystery unit, kids did observe the symptoms a students was having.  They developed questions, then then did investigations and reading to learn what was wrong.   But somehow the entire scientific process and its iterative nature was not explicit enough. I think the problem was that I knew the answer.  Perhaps that is the point of citizen science is that we won't know the outcome of the experiment.

      I would like to create an "I wonder board", and inspire more questions in my lab and science courses.  Many of the labs I do with students are hands on and engaging.  However, many of these labs have predetermined procedures.  I'd like to create more opportunities for students to make observations, and ask questions.  I'd like to take this a step farther by having students create their own investigations and procedures for finding answers to questions that they ask.  One step I may take is to review each of the labs that I do with students and think of ways that I can make the labs more inquiry based.  I'd also like to engage my students with a citizen science project.  I'm still considering which citizen science opportunity would be best for my student group.
