I have gone down to the river to do a sit observe a couple of times now. It is pretty enjoyable, but I have a hard time pulling away from the big picture to concentrate on the small stuff. Anyway, I've been a lot more observant of the heron that lives close. I've scared it away so many times, and am hoping by sitting quietly It'll come into view. This exercise is helping me to be aware and learn about the Herons' habits so I'll learn more about my neighbor!
This was also hard for me. But I did do a few drawings.
I couldn't pull myself to try to add color to it.
Then my grandson wanted me to draw his backpack, so I thought I'd try it.
Next, my granddaughter wanted a drawing of a shell.
I'm enjoying really looking at the object.
I am more comfortable drawing from a photo than real life. I felt pretty comfortable with my pencil sketch, but as I added watercolor I really felt like I didn't know how to do that.
In a photo you have all the time to go back and see what you might have missed. I finished, and then said, what's in the background, and then did the green wash. However, the photo shows a blurred background, and in nature you would have more detail to chose from.
Laura, where is your farm in Oregon? I had one in Hillsboro, that now my daughter owns, and I live on the Deschutes River way up by Wickiup Dam.

Heather, this is my birthday present as well, my 69th birthday. I'm looking forward to learning something about watercolors. I love them, but mine don't look anything like these examples!
What a great story! Really, I laughed at first at the drawing, but really looking at it, that bird does have attitude. I think you did a remarkable job!
Two years ago I got my certificate as an Oregon Master Naturalist. I really enjoyed the course and field courses. I have wanted to start journaling but just didn't seem to have a good way to start. I also want to learn to use and feel more comfortable with watercolors, and when I saw this course I hoped to get a start with it.
Very interesting to see others journals and how different there are, and how they changed over time. I don't imagine that I will be able to draw that well, but I'm willing to try. As an amateur photographer, artist and naturalist, I'm hoping to put all of this together somehow. Really, I need to learn to slow down and observe, and by drawing I'm hoping to achieve this.
I don't have a different idea, but I loved the monthly journal. Very flowing, and a neat way to see the months and seasons change all on one page.
