I liked the way Charles Darwin describes the sea luminous experience, I found interesting the details he gives about his experience, and how he deduced many things from the observation. Last weekend I went for a walk and also aiming to have a great birding day for my birthday, I could not draw, but i started thinking about how nature writers express their observations and I preferred to start writing the feelings of that moment. I liked a lot this exercise because I could practice the techniques to add color. Wet on wet, wet on dry, dry brush, wash, I liked the proportion of the bird, and I think I need to practice more about value. Here is the before and after: Tg6cd0mercdfknpvsdto4mfub9uw3wcm6 (2)

Hello  Sandy, it is very beautiful,  I really love the wings and the texture around the eye. I can see you used wet on diy technique, that is my favourite too.

It was a bit complicated to have all my materials in the field. The best is to get the water tank brushes! I took a folding chair with me, it also helped. Constructing a complete journal has been a challenge for me, because I never remember to take complete notes, If I draw and colour, I forget to take notes. If I take notes and draw, i do not have the time to add colours.  I imagine that skills come with time and lots of practice. Before I share my journal, I will try to make my journal page more accurate and including the subjects learned in the course.

This measuring technique worked better for me when drawing landscape, not to the smaller subjects. For smaller works better the other technique taught on the video. This measuring techniques are great, they really help to get a good proportion.

I used wet on dry,  think is better to detail the plants. it dries quicker. It is important to have a good paper, mine is not good quality and does not work with many layers and gets bad with a lot of water. I would like to try wet on wet, but it seems a bit difficult. To apply this on my journal, a would like to start with simple specimens, such as a leaf or a flower, not a complete landscape. Because that way, i can find a compact palette and work on less details at a time.

I used watercolour before, but it was difficult for me. I worked on both palettes, the landscape palette was more complex because it has a huge variety of colours, like all the colours you could think.  I am not sure i have them all. The bird´s palette was shorter, it was great to do this exercise, I enjoyed this more. The landscape was a challenge, because first I focused so much on the brighter colours and  when I though I had finished, then I realized all the colours from the sky were left. Mixing the colours was great.

I never thought before about asking myself why things are like they are in nature. It has been difficult for me doing this assignment because i have not so much nature close to me, but I was observing a dove near my house, It was alone, Why? Why was that dove alone in a really small park? Was it a young male with out a partner? Probably is not time for mating. Was it searching for food? or just resting a while before completing its journey?

It helped me identifying quickly the basic shapes of the animals (foxes) and details like the head shape, ears, but just the shapes. that way I draw just the basics like the triangle of the face and ears. Also i could see the straightness of the front legs and the size of the tail. It was hard to draw them because they moved so fast. The duck was more easy for me. IMG_4587 IMG_4588

At the beginning a though it was difficult to draw without seeing, but after I started, I felt more confident and also relax. It was easier than I though, as you can keep your sight exactly where you are drawing the details of the shapes. This way of drawing the contours helps you focus really on the subject. I loved it.IMG_4581IMG_4580

I love drawing landscapes, I love going to a Lake near my town, there I can draw the water and the plants that grow on the shore and a lot of ferns under the trees. I feel more confident drawing plants because they wait for you all day long! For me it is difficult to draw moving things as insects ans birds. Sometimes I find difficult to concentrate on writing before drawing. I just want to draw first, I think I have to get used to it. I need to practice a lot more on keeping a journal.IMG_4579

I enjoyed a lot this exercise because observing better each plant you find many different features in each specimen that you did not notice before. After drawing the first specimen, I could find more features in the second one and started finding new ones in the first one too. Seeing things in one plant, makes you realize that the other does not have it. I forgot to measure my specimens, but in order to write the measurements, we can start with measures and then with characteristics and after that drawing. After drawing we can notice more new characteristics we found during the drawing process. .IMG_4576

Very nice drawing, you did a great job with the perspective of the wings. I like also the branch.

    1. I Liked drawing from a photograph, I could take my time to draw the details, the colors are more clear. I wish i could see the bird moving to analyze in a better way the beak, body, wings. 2.If I were sketching in nature, I would not notice details as the different colours, color of feathers. @Dan Thanks Dan, but remember I am a beginner! I live on the Andes at 2.550 meters over the sea level, so not much of rain-forest vegetation. It is very pretty though. I would love to see yours too.

Hi Jane, I agree with you that photography sometimes does not give you all the details that you observe in nature. It is always better to draw and colour so you can see details and understand how nature is formed. I loved also the zoom like detailed drawings.

I am a birder too, a beginner.  I was also very motivated by the video of the journals. I would love to concentrate on birds too. I hope you enjoy the course.
