PaigeParticipantLove this. I have many of the same birds, and can see them from my dining room window, where I spend a lot of time when it's cold out. My indoor "sit spot"!in reply to: Opening Your Senses #664812

PaigeParticipantI saw a red-breasted nuthatch yesterday! Upside down on a pine tree eating insects I presume.in reply to: Opening Your Senses #648024

@Diane Hi Diane--I'm outside of Grass Valley at about 2500 feet. I get up to your area pretty regularly as I am a member of the Boeger Winery "Barberians." We've also been getting our Christmas tree every year in Pollock Pines (Incense Cedar), although we may have to come up with a new plan for that. Sorry for the late reply--I had company for a week and just got back to the class!

PaigeParticipant1. It was nice having the subject not move! In fact, I started it on the 7th and then had company and didn't finish it until today, the 15th! It was challenging to capture everything I saw with pencil only. Decided not to try color yet since I am totally new at this. Also was challenging to not keep fussing with it. 2. I really noticed everything going on with the branch, with all the texture and lichen. Also the different colors and patterns in the bird's feathers. And the irregularities in the leaves--chewed areas, brown spots, etc.in reply to: Jump Right in! #646676

@Nancy Just googled it. Man, that theme song takes me back! Unfortunately, I found this in Wikipedia: "Unfortunately, most episodes of Hodgepodge Lodge have been lost because the master tapes were erased to save money by allowing the tapes to be reused. Of the over 760 original episodes, only about 30 remain. Maryland Public Broadcasting offers some of the surviving episodes on DVD."

@Nancy Absolutely! I love the Waltons too. I own the first 7 seasons (the last two got a little odd when so many of the original characters left).

PaigeParticipantI asked that question of Liz a couple weeks ago. She said the larger one is for practicing and lessons and the smaller one is for your "official" journal. But I think it's ultimately up to you if you want one that's kind of a keepsake or just want to work on skills, or have your "official" journal include lots of practice drawings.in reply to: Style Your Journal Your Way #645361

PaigeParticipantI wanted to start a nature journal when we bought property in the Sierra Nevada foothills in 2006. I bought a couple of books and some supplies, but never seemed to be able to make time. We since sold the property (didn't have time for all the work needed there either!). Now I am recently retired and have a new property, not far from the old one, and I live here full time. Part of my goal for the nature journal is to immerse myself in nature and learn more about the flora, fauna, and geography here. My idea is to have a two page spread for each week, and to spend some time documenting things that week. By next fall, I think it will be cool to have a visual and written record of how things changed throughout the seasons, and I hope to be a lot more familiar with our place in the world.in reply to: Style Your Journal Your Way #645358
