It has been pretty cold here in Colorado and I haven’t started doing much walking out yet so I did some drawing that were presented in our course just as practice exercises. Can’t sit outside for long and the higher country still has too much snow.  I am so looking forward to taking my sketchbook up a high meadow very soon to sketch some of the beautiful wild flowers we have here.  Some birds are here already.  Need to take some pictures are draw from them “inside”.  April should be better.imageimage

We were in Florida back in February and we were camping at Devil’s Den in Williston .  The days were warm and I sat at a picnic table and drew these two items.  They have totally different textures and I was trying to use the hatching, contour hatching, and some scribbling in this exercise.   I learned that these techniques help to convey depth and texture like whether something is smooth or rough.image

Yes, it helps you focus on the subject but this is a rather difficult exercise for me.  Need lots more practice!image

This is my second yellow warbler attempt that I used the watercolor on.  I have never used the water brush before so IAm trying to get used to it .  It was a medium brush.  Perhaps a fine would be better for details.  I used the contour lines in the drawing but when I tried the contour lines with the brush, I think my lines ran together and I wa not as pleased with the results as with the plain line drawing.  More practice!! image

I like drawing from a photo as the picture doesn’t move and you can go back and make corrections when you see something you hadn’t noticed earlier.  I didn’t use any color on this drawing which I probably should have done as I see by the work of the other artists.  I did this drawing last Oct. 10, 2019 at 7 :45pm.image

This is the first image of the yellow warbler that I drew.  As you can see from the date it was a while ago.image

I liked several of the journalers presentations. I was impressed with D. J’s journal of the Mourning Dove and how he used geometric shapes to capture the shape of the bird’s head, body, and wings.  (Balls and triangles).  His vignettes of the spider  captured many different details that I thought were great. I also liked Holly’s journal .  She had individual items like the pine cone, the dead weed.  All of her drawings captured detail of one item along with background notes about each.  I liked that she experimented with pencil, black pen, and watercolor to see which one she liked the best.  I plan to do the same.
