It has really helped to adjust my quick sketches and to focus more closely on details.

20210124_103707   I think my negative space drawing came out better than a straight sketch would have.  Useful tool for sure.

Wow. This was extremely difficult. My first attempts bore little resemblance to the pictures. Successive attempts showed some improvement. I found it almost impossible to not look at the paper. I was not able to maintain proportions and come back the starting point. I found little in first attempt that I could say was close to what I intended.  By the 4th sketch, I was better able to at least end up with a decent representation. I could tell what it was.  This will take lots of practice. When I am sketching in nature, I usually will take a photo and then sketch from that.

This was an easy lesson for me. Often when we are traveling or hiking my husband and I will work through the process you have described here. It comes naturally to us. I created the entry below from an observation we made just the other day. 20200801_171045

20200801_125920For this exercise I chose to do a walk instead of a sit spot. Mosquitoes are preventing my stopping in one place for too long. I did choose one particular area as my focus. It was easier for me to notice details in birds than with plants. I am anxious to observe a different area than one I am familiar with. I could see that one page may not be enough for some spots. I already have other sit spots in mind.

warblersketch The nice thing about sketching from a photo is that you have all the time you need. Creating texture in the branches was more difficult for me. Nothing about drawing is easy for me. I am a newbie at this, although I've attempted it from time to time over the years. As far as noticing details, being a lifelong birder has trained me to notice details. Making it happen on the page is another story altogether.

    1. I was inspired to begin nature journaling as a way to develop art skill like sketching and painting. My husband and I spend summers in SE Alaska and there is much opportunity to explore nature. I wanted to have more than just photos. 2. I really identify with the way Liz has kept her journal. It is more than just a book of sketches. Each segment is attached to a memory, recording a time and place of meaning where she may have spent a considerable amount of time or felt a closeness to what she observed that she wanted to preserve.
