TerryParticipantAfter the rain stopped (June 24th in the afternoon) the feeder on my back deck got busy again. Goldfinches, titmice, nuthatches, downy woodpecker, house finch, and chipping sparrow have all been regular visitors.in reply to: Activities: Local Bird Exploration #717015

TerryParticipantWhile it poured rain at my home this afternoon, I spent several peaceful minutes watching the Cornell FeederWatch cam. Immediately I recognized the blue jay, the grackles, and the male cardinal. A woodpecker appeared but was hidden by one of the feeders. I noticed a red patch but I couldn't tell how large the bird was until it moved to another perch. Hairy, for sure! And a little while later, a red-bellied woodpecker! Red-winged blackbirds, several mourning doves, and the cardinal front and center on the platform feeder. I recognized the call of the mourning doves and the squeak of their wings. The red-bellied woodpecker has moved from feeder to feeder, snacking from each one. Here are two I need help with:in reply to: Activities: Local Bird Exploration #717009

TerryParticipantActivity 4. My favorite bird. Probably the cardinal! Size smaller than robin but larger than a sparrow, red and black markings, wonderful whistle calls, to name one, and suburban habitat..in reply to: Activities: Bird ID Practice #707501

TerryParticipant. Activity #1. Telling two birds apart by shape. Woodpecker... downy vs hairy... a brief visit at the feeder today included a slightly larger woodpecker... Definitely a male hairy. His size was considerably smaller than a downy but nowhere near pileated or red bellied. We’ve had downys off and on, but this gentleman was larger. activity 2. Food finding behaviors. Watched the male goldfinches vie for a rug on the feeder. So interesting to watch them push each other away. A couple of females behaved similarly...waiting on top of the feeder pole for one to leave the wrung hummingbird passed by the nectar feeder for a go at a pink and red potted plant! crows... are there grubs in the lawn?in reply to: Activities: Bird ID Practice #707478

TerryParticipantSuch a beautiful bird, and lucky for you! I haven’t seen any at my feeders but I have a friend who gets them often at hers. I think she offers a wide variety of seeds etc. to attract as many different birds as she can. What type of seeds was your beauty enjoying?in reply to: Activities: Exploring Birds #698262

TerryParticipantI loved learning where different birds spend their time by exploring the Wall of Birds. That is a graphic I will revisit as I learn more. At present I am focused on bird calls and songs on my daily walks and I have got to remember to bring my binoculars along so that I can try to locate the bird as it calls or sings. Meanwhile, a Spring photo from last week in our yard...in reply to: Activities: Exploring Birds #698260
