DeborahParticipantThis is the 2nd time I am taking this class - thought it was a great idea to try everything again. It is alot easier to draw from a photo, much easier to take the time to see the shape and colors of the bird. I do like drawing from nature, though. It is nice to be outside and there is something organic about drawing on the fly. My yellow warbler drawing did not turn out as nice as the 2d time I drew it from taking the course the first time. Oh well, some days I am better than others at drawing.in reply to: Jump Right in! #703104

DeborahParticipantI read Wendell Berry in college and loved his writing. He lived on a farm in Kentucky and since I live in Ohio, I felt we were neighbors. I hear a little traffic from the freeway but the house being built next door is silent and I am hearing birds in our wooded yard. Oops, someone's doing yardwork. It is supposed to rain hard later but now it is fairly quiet and cool, around 55 degrees outside. I really feel at home in the woods, especially being alone there. Looking forward to practicing my new drawing and watercoloring skills out in the field. There is a lake close to me that I look forward to painting soon, as the weather picks up.in reply to: The Power of Reflection #701484

DeborahParticipantI had a real tough time getting the outside shape of the bird. I decided to draw the marsh wren and fill in the details as opposed to using one of gesture drawings. I do see where, if I practice every day, I can get alot better at proportions and negative space. This was a hard assignment; I am not a natural artist but I have really gotten tons better since I started art classes a couple years ago.in reply to: Giving Your Drawings Depth #696392

DeborahParticipantThis exercise helped me really relax into drawing - normally, I am tense about getting it right. Interestingly, working on the gesture instead of fixating on drawing the subject allows me to relax and sometimes the subject looks more like the animal than if I had worked toward the perfect drawing. I have been erasing alot of my marks every time I draw so it has been a frustrating experience ie. make a mark, that's not quite right, erase and then try again. When I work on gesture drawing, I focus more on the whole animal as opposed to a "photograph" of the subject. Also, Liz really encourages folks to have fun, which I find helpful for me.in reply to: Capturing Behavior – Gesture Drawing #685470

DeborahParticipantThe beetle study is just sooo pretty and I don't like beetles! Did you use watercolor or watercolor pencils?in reply to: The Power of Comparison #684658

DeborahParticipantI really like the idea of sitting down and observing nature for as much time as I want. There is so much flora and fauna that can be appreciated more when you really look at whatever it is. I also like to have a "scrapbook" of impressions from where I've been. The idea of using watercolor in a nature journal sounds like alot of fun. I am taking this class while we are all off on coronavirus watch and really need a focus. My art classes have been cancelled or ended and I need to be productive while I am off. Art is one of the things I would really like to enjoy in my retirement (which I am in now). I will have to be patient with myself, since I like to be good at the things I do but don't have a natural artistic talent. I find that I need to draw/paint regularly in order to progress so the consistency of this class will help me do that. Deb F.in reply to: Style Your Journal Your Way #672026
