Activity 2. I am already limiting my use of plastic products and recycle everything that I can. In restaurants, I request, " no straw please". I do enjoy grinding my coffee beans, but now I will request shade grown coffee. I will consider becoming a member of the landscaping committee at my homeowners association. Activity 3. I have noticed changes in the bird population in my lifetime: now I frequently see large wild turkeys which I never did before. They usually are in pairs and seem to bicker a lot! They seem to be attracted to moving car tires and occasionally stop traffic! Activity 4. This course inspired my to make every morning dog walk into a 1 hour bird watch. My retired Greyhound is old and slow, so it works out quite well. When I return home, I look up birds I didn't recognize. I'm keeping a handwritten list (for now, will consider eBird, but I don't want birding to become a competitive sport for me). Ann

Today I took a different birdwatching walk and headed to the pier at Quincy Bay, coastal MA south of Boston.  With the help of Merlin App and the The Audubon Society Field Guide, if identified many Barn Swallows living at the pier. I now know they have migrated from South and Central America for breeding. What expert flyers they are! So fast and agile as they zoom along catching insects (way too fast for a photo, always on the move). They must make their mud nests underneath the pier, but I was unable to see them. Later I saw some again around a small fresh water pond (I assume they need fresh water to drink). What fun! This course has really enhanced my enjoyment of birding. Stay safe. Ann

Hello Fellow Students, I'm enjoying this class very much. I live on the New England coast, south of Boston. Each morning when walking my dog I make mental notes of the birds I encounter. Some I have never seen before, including a Swainson's Thrush, a ruby-crowned kinglet, and Mr and Mrs Turkey (he was huge).  Every year the osprey return to the tall platform to breed, and the Egret's wade around the salt water marshes. Happy birding. Stay safe. Ann 4/28/2020
