Activity #4. My favorite bird today is the Eastern Bluebird because I could ID it! I used color-- predominantly blue body, red breast, some white-- and size (robin-sized) mostly, plus being here in Virginia. The bird was alone, not social, and flitted between a tree and our car. I also used the Merlin app to confirm, which it did. I like the process of checking multiple sources while I am still at this early stage of learning.
Pelicans are among my favorite birds as well, and, thank you for the roseate spoonbill photo particularly. In February, visiting the Everglades, I searched for this species but was unsuccessful. One day I will see them in the wild!
Hello from southeastern Virginia (Gloucester County). I'm a definite beginner and loving the course. Right now I am able to ID only the more common birds. In the last two weeks I've seen ruby-throated hummingbirds, turkey vultures, barn swallows, blue jays, mourning doves, and Northern cardinals. It's a start! A few years ago this bird landed on our outdoor porch, apparently stunned. We stood watch and the bird eventually flew away vigorously. I think it is an indigo bunting, one of the most beautiful birds I've seen at my home.
