I provide a diverse habitat along with a variety of food options in the hope of attracting and sustaining as many birds as I can. Since it is late spring in northern NJ, I am currently the host to the enchanting hummingbirds. I have a dedicated section of flowers loved by them along with feeders that I diligently clean and maintain. It is joyful to watch them flit around. All of the birds that visit my yard enrich my day and I could not imagine a world without them.

Tanagers were in the manmade pond/waterfall in my wooded yard. I also see many woodpeckers, cardinals, nuthatches, and starlings regularly. At the lake about a quarter of a mile down, there are blue herons, swans, mallards, geese and kingfishers. Occasionally eagles are present as well. -

Several ruby throated hummingbirds have been active at my feeders however despite the multitude of flowers I have provided, all of which are hummingbirds' favorites, they seem to prefer the feeders. Having researched this behavior it seems that it should be the opposite as flowers should be the preferred food. So I am not sure why this seems to be the case.

Cardinals, woodpeckers and blue jays are year round residents but now visiting us here in northern New Jersey are the Baltimore orioles, rose breasted grosbeaks and ruby throated hummingbirds, all so beautiful to see.

Over the last three days here in northern New Jersey I have seen catbirds, male and female orioles, grosbeak, a bluebird, robins and the hummingbirds have returned. It is very interesting to see how the regular year round birds like the blue jays, cardinals, woodpeckers, nuthatches and mourning doves interact with the newly arrived migrating birds at the feeder. There is a definite pecking order and sometimes the party gets a bit rowdy!

A rose breasted grosbeak appeared on my feeder today here in north New Jersey. This is one of my favorite spring visitors who was very content to dine on some sunflower seeds.

I live in the northern part of New Jersey. I never realized how difficult it is to get a bird to stand still! The mourning dove was the only cooperative participant today. I truly admire the Wall at Cornell and hope one day to be able to visit in person.
