During summer vacations, I use to give my children a camera and have them go on a scavenger hunt.  The goal was to find all the items on the list and take a picture of each item before returning.  It kept them busy, they had fun, and they worked cooperatively.  Sometimes, I would reward them with a special outing if they found all the items within a time limit.  They looked forward to their scavenger hunt days.

I spent a lot of time outdoors as a child playing with my brother.  I don't think we really explored nature or thought much about it.  We just liked playing outdoors.  I didn't become interested in nature exploration until my son was born.  From the time he was a week old, I use to sit outside on the swingset with him and point out all the birds, trees, acorns, etc.  He may not have understood my words, but we bonded over our time outside, and he grew up to love nature (and he had an excellent vocabulary at a very early age).  A few years ago, a close friend of mine introduced me to birding, and I instantly became hooked.  I have started taking my fifth graders on nature walks to watch for birds and just sit peacefully in our outdoor classroom. It has been a wonderful experience for them (and for me) to unplug and share that time outdoors.  I chose to take this course to learn more ways to make my outdoor classroom time more educational and enjoyable for my students.

I like that you shared your whole work area in the image not just our drawing and painting.  Very creative and beautiful workspace.

I feel like I have definitely come a long way since the first lesson.   Adding color was a challenge because I am still learning what to do with watercolor.  I was much happier with the wings before I added the watercolors, but I am pleased with some of the techniques I picked up.  I do like some of the things happening with the color in the branch even though I did not match the colors from the image.

I use to shy away from using the wet on wet technique and disliked watercolors for a long time because of the lack of control.  I have been experimenting with wet on dry and dry brush these past few months and finding watercolors much more enjoyable to work with.  I like the idea of using wet on wet for the sky or water or larger areas.  I just have to remember to be patient and let it dry thoroughly before moving to more detailed work.

This is the first photo I have uploaded.  I could not figure out how to rotate the image. Sorry. Daffodil and hyacinths have recently bloomed in my backyard.  I love the purple and yellow next to each other in the garden, and who could resist the scent of hyacinths?  Seeing the two of these flowers blooming is a sure sign of spring in my garden.

I am also a teacher.  I have enjoyed birds and drawing my whole life, but COVID has brought me so much closer to nature.  I found myself studying the birds instead of just listening to their songs.  It has also become a sanctuary for me and a way to relax from the stresses of the situation.  I began sketching and painting birds, and when I heard about this course I knew it was going to help take me to the next level.
