I saw something similar. I was at a local patch with a small pond, and the Mallards were diving around and literally zooming around the pond.

According to Google there are about 250 species. I have never seen an owl before, but I hope to soon.

Yes, they probably were. In fall, raptors gather in groups called kettles. Hope this helps and happy birding!

They could think of him as a predator, like how crows mob hawks, but I'm not sure and have never seen this.

I use Barska 12x50 binoculars and the numbers are FOV 261 ft@1000 yd. They work great for looking at waterfowl at a distance, but they get blurry when looking at birds closer than about 7ft

Either a long-billed thrasher or a brown thrasher, depending on where you saw it. But I would say long-billed because of the bill length
