Activity 1: Bird matter to me because I love spending time with animals and in nature. Bird make these even more fun as they can be seen often. There are so many different bird species in many different colors and sizes. Seeing them always makes me happy whether I see hummingbird or a bald eagle or anything in between. I never thought about why birds really are important, but now that I have taken the course, I can see how they impact humans. Thank you for making this wonderful course about bird watching!

Activity 1: There is a forest preserve that I often visit. In the wooded areas I will see woodpeckers, indigo buntings, cedar waxwings, robins, and small hawks. There is also a pond where I find blue herons and egrets in the water and goldfinches and kingfishers flying around it for bugs. Another area they have is a marshy place where there is usually a green heron and sometimes a killdeer.

Activity 1: I watched birds on the Cornell Feeder Cam. There were so many different species. I noticed mourning doves, red winged blackbird males and females, grackles, a woodpecker, and a chickadee. I noticed that when a bird got close to the grackles, they would scare them away. All of these birds were eating seeds. I did not know that woodpeckers eat seeds, although I do sometimes have one show up at my bird feeders. The mourning doves and grackles would sometimes call. I am wondering if it is to tell other birds where the food is or to keep together. I also watched the hummingbird camera. I just watched it for a minute or so and I must have seen about twenty hummingbirds. It was so neat! There were a couple different types there. I know one was the ruby-throated hummingbird. There was a type with a black head and I was wondering why a black head would benefit them.

Activity 1: Ruby-throated hummingbirds and Rufous hummingbirds: What stands out to me about these hummingbirds is that the Ruby-throated is located in the East side of the United States, Canada, and Mexico, and the Rufous are located in the West. For the Rufous, they travel north just on the very West of the United States by California, Oregon, and Washington, but on their way South, they go practically as far East as Nebraska. Activity 3: American Goldfinch: In the summer, the male American Goldfinch has bright yellow plumage with a black cap, black wings, and white wing bars. In the winter, the bird is pale yellow or tan with no black cap.

Activity 1: Out side my window today I saw two female ruby-throated hummingbirds, a house wren, female cardinal, a bunch of sparrows, either a hairy or downy woodpecker, and a male goldfinch at my window feeder. There was also a dark brown bird that I couldn't figure out what it was. It was medium sized and shaped like a common grackle, but slight smaller and just brown.

Activity 1: sparrow- small size, short neck, fairly short tail cat bird- medium sized and long tail Activity 3: sparrow- hopping for seeds on ground cat bird- eating off of suet hummingbird- drinking sugar water from hummingbird feeder Activity 4: cat bird- 1. dark gray body, legs, and beak 2. darker line across eyes 3. eating from suet feeder and using tail for balancing

Activity 1: My favorite bird from the Wall of Birds was the Shoebill. I just think they are so fascinating. Their beaks are huge and they have a hook at the end of them. Activity 2: The Eastern Phoebe is a flycatcher. I love watching them sit on a branch, fly out to catch a but, and fly back to their original location! The Great Egret is a wading bird. I saw one the other day as it was trying to catch a fish. It was so close. The Red-shouldered Hawk is a raptor. I think I have been seeing and hearing this type of bird. It has a loud call that sounds like PEW-PEW-PEW! Activity 3: Some of my favorite birds in my neighborhood are ones that I see in my backyard. I really like the Gray Catbird, Goldfinch, and Ruby-throated Hummingbird. The Catbird is medium sized and gray with a long tail and black beak. There is one that comes to my house often that is missing its tail! The Goldfinch is a bright yellow bird with black wings. The females are more of an olive green. Lately, there have been Hummingbirds showing up to my Hummingbird feeder. The only ones I have seen are girls because they do not have red on their throat. They have white bellies, green back, and long, black beak.
