JeanParticipantWas really inspired to look at some of the authors mentioned that I had not read before. John Muir, Rachel Carson, Thoreau have always been favorites. I have never been one to wax poetic, but found the reflection exercise interesting. I will try to include more of this in my journal.in reply to: The Power of Reflection #746195

JeanParticipantIt was fun to see how I progressed. The spatial relationship/negative space of the various parts was something I really found valuable. Layering water colors also worked well here. I did not put in a background but will try that another time. Still have to work on getting fine lines with the water brush.in reply to: See How Far You’ve Come #745568

JeanParticipantWent to Balboa Park and sketched the Cabrillo Bridge with the San Diego Tower. Clouds in the sky, 70*, Light breeze. I carry my supplies in a back pack in a ziplock bag. I usually have a heavy sheet of plastic to sit on if there isn't a bench or other perch. This was fun to do. Took a little over an hour to do.in reply to: Filling Your Sketches with Color #744440

JeanParticipantPainting from a photo exercise--I used layering of colors. I found this technique useful but time consuming. Its hard to wait to get to the next color. I think you would definitely need a photo to complete in the field journaling if you want to be detailed. I enjoyed this exercise but don't always have the time it takes....in reply to: Filling Your Sketches with Color #743746

JeanParticipantI've tried watercolors before(limited). I think that is is hard to do but a skill that can be learned with practice. For the most part I was able to get the colors I saw, but the images on the laptop vs. desktop computers were slightly different in color. I find its hard to paint details with the water brush. I'd either get too much or not enough water. Getting the detail on the wings of the bird I found particularly challenging.in reply to: Capturing Nature’s Color Palettes #742487

JeanParticipantWas a challenging exercise. I chose to do the wren.I think I would need a reference photo for a more finished sketch from a field sketch. Not sure my phone camera would get the detail. I'll have to see.
The birds/animals wouldn't sit still long enough to get something refined. Most useful is the negative space concept and getting the general shapes.

JeanParticipantI found this exercise challenging. It took awhile. I tried to concentrate on the relationships between shapes, but I never quite disconnected from seeing a bird. I'm pleased with the results and could keep tweaking it.in reply to: Drawing What You See – Upside Down Drawing #740696

JeanParticipantI think gesture drawing is helping me to see shapes of subjects that I need to get first in order to capture what I'm looking at. I found it hard to do that when the subjects move a lot - like the kit fox. I had to watch that video several times. Gesture is helping me to stay looser with drawing, instead of getting lost in the details.in reply to: Capturing Behavior – Gesture Drawing #739149

JeanParticipantEnjoyed doing this. The exercise of posing questions from what you are looking at was good and will be really helpful away from home.
Even sitting in my backyard, comparing herbs that I use in cooking was enlightening.

JeanParticipantUntil I improve, I thing trying to draw something everyday might be good. I liked color on the page, boxing and writing around subjects. I'll need to remind myself that it doesn't need to be perfect.in reply to: Style Your Journal Your Way #735944
