I tried to write with my comparison pics but could not make it work. I just wanted to say that I loved this class. I have learned so much. I don't feel that the yellow warbler shows it but my sketching really has improved. I struggled with this one for some reason. I still am frustrated with the water color but will keep on working on it. All the techniques given us has really helped with the sketching. Thanks so much for offering this class. I plan on taking a couple more form this sight. Below are my comparison warblers.

My landscape was from the middle of the lake. I took a picture and painted it later. I am not sure what caused all the circles but am guessing it was water on the camera lens. Again I am still struggling with the water colors. I left the white white but needed a few white highlights and could not get them.Scan_0008

Managing my materials is no problem. While my husband fishes I sit and sketch so I have a bag ready to go at the drop of a hat. Now I just need to include my paints. The sketching is going really well. I feel I have really improved. sketch of the stellarjay turned out so good and then I started painting. Watercolors are really frustrating me. I cannot get the colors write and I cannot paint in the details. I gave up after trying multiple times for detail. I like the facial expression but the rest ...I give up.Scan_0007

I have used acrylics to paint birds but have never used water color. I found water color much more difficult. I tend to over paint trying to get everything perfect and therefore the paper got beaded. I could not get a bright yellow. I tried adding white but it just lightened the yellow. Does anyone have any ideas for me. I used dry on wet for the bird along with some dry on dry trying to get a feather effect. I used wet on wet for the back ground. Here I had to keep mixing the colors because I would run out of paint and could not get the same color again. I will keep practicing. I love to paint.Scan_0006

This was quite challenging and I had to work very slowly. The sparrow turned out better than I anticipated. The marks on the stomach got a little confusing.Scan_0003

I liked doing the comparison study. It made me really look at each flower and each leaf. I am searching for my style and decided to try the boxes and I like them. Scan_0002

I have several reasons for taking this class on nature journaling. After my daughter gave me The Naturalist's Notebook for tracking changes, I started my own journal. Like the last journalist I wanted to enter something every day but it was to difficult so I ended up not doing it at all. I then started to paint birds with acrylics and have finished several nice paintings but what I really want to be able to do is sketch nature and then put it into my paintings. My second reason is to help me create a bird identification book for children. I am presently working on Warbling Warblers. Studying warblers was a Covid-19 goal because I could do it from my own yard. I am hoping that I can learn to observe and listen more carefully and be able to draw the birds for my book. I am so excited about taking this class because it combines many of my interests in one class. I love birding, nature, drawing, painting , and journaling.
