IMG-6939It is tough to be in the field and trying for the full gesture drawing before the subject leaves.  The Cedar Waxwing flew in a blink but in that moment, I could not see the flat shape of the top of its head.  The feathers seemed tucked down as it flew.  Does anyone know why this bird has a red spot on the tertial feathers?  What adaptation could the red color be for and in only one small spot?

IMG-6937This was a fun exercise.  When I look at all the Song Sparrows we all drew, I enjoyed the fact that each has its own character and personality.

I found a Red-breasted Nuthatch flies to the base of the tree and works up the trunk.  It seemed to forage on one particular tree the most.

I saw a Great Horned Owl female nesting.  I expected her to be low in the nest since it was snowing.  There was an owl upright blocking the entire hole.  On closer observation, I decided it was the male because I could see the tufts of a second owl in the tree hole cavity that looked to be lower as if sitting on the nest.  I knew from the research to listen.  It was the second time back that I saw the tree with the owls in it.
