We need to add more flowering plants and shrubs with berries to provide food and shelter. Since we live in an apartment complex, we can't have a brush pile. Luckily, a wooded area nearby does provide shelter and natural food. I don't think the maintenance workers use fertilizers or pesticides, so that's a pro. The grassy areas near the apartments are regularly kept short, limiting its appeal to birds. I regularly clean the bird feeders and keep them close to the windows. Our cats stay indoors, so they can't hunt any birds. The bird bath is cleaned and refilled every few days, so there's always fresh water. We have bark for mulch, so there are lots of places for insects( a.k.a bird food) to live. Overall, my local area is okay, but there is room for improvement.

I live in an apartment and don't have much space for gardening. However, I do have a pedestal-style bird bath near some shrubs (not sure if they are native or exotic). The areas surrounding the shrubs have pine tree bark as mulch, providing invertebrate habitat. I have a large tube feeder and a ceramic ground feeder that are both filled with black-oil sunflower seeds. Near the apartment complex, there is a grassy area next to a mixed forest; I've seen and heard a variety of birds, such as Blue Jays, American Crows and Carolina Chickadees. At my feeders, I've seen Carolina Chickadees, House Finches, Song Sparrows, Tufted Titmouses, and Northern Cardinals. I've seen the aforementioned species using the bird bath as well; Northern Mockingbirds and Mourning Doves have also used it. Some of my neighbors have tube feeders with mixed seeds that mainly attract House Sparrows. Once the weather warms up, I plan on buying some ferns, flowers and other plants that will help the birds!

Activity 1. Birds matter to me for a number of reasons. First, seeing and hearing birds just makes my day better.  Second, they play a vital role in practically every ecosystem, from forests to deserts. Third and finally, the fact that they're living dinosaurs makes them totally awesome! I already thought that birds were important; taking this course merely reinforced that belief. These lessons are great! 👏
