This took awhile, and I really felt like I had blown the proportions out incorrectly for awhile, but I thought it looked pretty good in the end.

This was one of a few pages I did during the "themes" lesson. In this case I was looking at patterns in the camellia petals. I was noticing how the petals near the center lined up radially away from the center. I also noticed that in the tip of each petal was a slight thickening that showed when the light came through the petal.

FrancescaParticipantMy ability to gauge how far I've moved across the page is pretty limited. I am wondering a bit about hand speed and beats of time as a way to improve, but probably there's also a lot of figuring out angles.in reply to: Focusing on Your Subject – Blind Contour Drawing #801586

I I made my sketch of the beetles (below) and came home to look up what they were. These are box elder bugs, and I love the markings. They appear to be harmless to the trees, seeds, and leaves that they feed on. This time of year seems very unlikely for the seedpods, but according to other commenters I found online they do also eat other leaves, dung, and dead insects. Pretty much anything. Doing this thematic exercise helped me to appreciate and learn from the insects rather than just be annoyed they chased me from my creekside sit spot!

FrancescaParticipantI was looking for a seat by the creek in a nearby park, but found far too many insects flying around, which is unusual. They were clustered thick on the ground in places, and flying everywhere.in reply to: Noticing Themes in Nature #798798

I wanted to try to get some of the color, so I experimented with the watercolors on a second draft. I am not a very experienced painter, and my lines seem very wide and uncontrolled compared to some others I see.

FrancescaParticipantHaving a photo to draw from wasn't too bad. I found it a little difficult to get the posture of the bird right. And without coloring it in, it's hard to distinguish between the greenish & black on the back of the bird and the bright brown on the front. I definitely noticed more about the feather structure than I would have from just looking at the photo.in reply to: Jump Right in! #793133

FrancescaParticipantI have long been a journal-er and a birdwatcher. During the pandemic I've also done some photographing of flowers and plants I find on my walks. I have never thought of myself as much of an artist, but I think learning to sketch a bit would help make walks and nature observance deeper and more memorable. I think from my photography experience that I will probably have at least one or two different things I'll want to capture from an outing. I would like to work up to birds, but might spend some time with plants for awhile since they stay put better...in reply to: Style Your Journal Your Way #792762
