This exercise encouraged me to look at the two plants very carefully. While on the surface, the orchid and amarylis differ greatly, they have similarities that became obvious as I observed them carefully. I enjoyed cataloging their parts!comparison

Devoting 15 minutes of silent time to observe was fruitful! The natural spot I chose was my back yard in suburban Boulder, so many of the sounds were typical of that setting--kids calling, planes overhead, etc. What I did notice, however, was that the birds coming to the feeder were unusually quiet, perhaps because of my presence. At the end of the time, a rabbit came into view, definitely a surprise since I was so close. Because it's winter, there isn't  much plant growth, but there are rose hips. I couldn't capture the dimpled surface very well, so that's a fine point worth working on.journal

appleI tried to capture the apple twice, once with light coming from the left and once from the right and above. The cast shadow on both are too dark, I think, so that' s something to work on. The highlight on the left one doesn't need to be outlined--I just need to keep it blank. These are definitely my best apples ever!

My careers have been steeped in words and numbers, and so I want to work on developing my visual skills. I want to "see" better. My journaling goal is to slow down and observe the details of the plant or animal in my focus. I'm also an art quilter, and I'd like to be able to incorporate drawing/painting into that art form.
