KellyParticipantMy comparison study was done between two plants that have very different overall structure but similar looking flowers. I found myself noticing several distinct features of each species through drawing. Representing the smaller detailed parts of the plant was easier for me but I struggled with representing the overall shape of the plants. I'm going to find a small ruler and tape it to the inside of my nature journal so I have it in the future. For this study the measurements were approximations. The overall balance of drawing, writing, and data I was happy with but I'd like to find a way to better separate out the parts of the comparison.in reply to: The Power of Comparison #829292

KellyParticipantI did my sit spot in my backyard. It was a little noisy since we have construction being done. I was surprised by the amount of bird activity after the first 10 minutes. Insects seemed unaffected. The insects were easy for me to spot but my challenge was getting observations before things left. There was a lot of quick fly-bys. I hadn't noticed the twisting of a vine around a support cable for a power pole in the back of the yard. It was a beautiful pattern and the light was coming through the thin base of the leaves but not filtering through the thicker tips. I go in my yard every day and the sit spot helped me experience things I haven't seen before.in reply to: Opening Your Senses #829187

KellyParticipantNoticing details came easy but it was hard to show them with just pencil. Labels helped and I was happy with the capturing of those key features. When it was done I noticed that the shape wasn't quite right and I'd like to try that again. It felt like I went straight to the ID details and forgot to start with those basic shapes. Since I didn't have color I found myself thinking more deeply about how to clearly communicate the colors in words.in reply to: Jump Right in! #828098

KellyParticipantI'm really interested in tracking the changes of native plants throughout the year. I know I'm looking for a balance of written notations and images, but haven't worked out how to include the progression through time. I'm considering having a page dedicated to a specific plant that I revisit throughout the year. Then I can come back to that space different times throughout the year and add drawings next to other dates for easy comparison.in reply to: Style Your Journal Your Way #828096
