I've been working with water color for a few years, but following tutorials that guide me through color mixing. It was hard to mix on my own and try to match what I saw in my yard and I'm not sure I could create the same colors again, at least now. More practice is needed for sure. Nature Journal 1.29.23

This was really challenging. First of all the foxes were way to cute!  I didn't have any wildlife happening in my yard or birdfeeder so did some sketching from the Cornell Sapsucker Woods feeders. I definitely was paying closer attention to the birds, shapes, and what was happening. I really like this process and will continue to play around with it even though I'm not especially satisfied with my initial results. As Liz encourages, I will be patient with myself! IMG-3713

I've always loved contour drawing. It definitely helps you stay focused and is always fun, easy, and quick. For me, it helps just be with the process and disconnect from any result. IMG-0300IMG-0301IMG-0302

This was hard! I've lived next to the same oak tree for over 30 years and couldn't remember the shape of its leaves or identify it. Leaves have now come out and hoping to identify the species in the coming weeks. Comparison Study

A lovely warm day in Houston and decided to sit in the backyard with my dog. It is hard to draw a black dog who doesn't sit still for long! Enjoyed the activity and will start to do more regularly. IMG-0151

At first I was intimidated, but it was a bit easier than I thought. Drawing the various types of feathers is challenging.  wouldn't have paid as close attention to that if I was not drawing it. I also paid more attention to the various angles of the body and the negative space (learned about that in Liz's last class.) Since it was a photo, I didn't even think to write notes until I looked at the comments below. I think a photo is definitely easier for birds that don't stay still but I would love to be able to draw more quickly and capture general gestures of wildlife on the move.

I bought a book on nature journaling in 1998 and started a journal in 1999. I have a number of entries for 1999 and 2000, then one for 2007, and nothing until 2020! My original journal still has empty pages. As I am looking towards retirement, I want to spend much, much more time in nature. I love the idea of a page or two per month, but am a bit intimidated by my lack of drawing skills. I love the idea of doing lots of practice drawings. Hopefully I can be patient with myself.
