Activity 1:  The birds in our area (CO mountains) are finally starting to be active!  I saw a hairy woodpecker, black billed magpies, American crows, black capped chickadees, mountain chickadees, and a Steller's jay in our neighborhood today. Activity 2:  I'm just getting familiar with the Merlin app, but I'm hoping to use it to help me learn to differentiate crows v. ravens by more than their tail shape in flight. Activity 3:  I was surprised by the variety of waterfowl at our local reservoir.  We apparently have gadwalls, green winged teals, common mergansers, Barrow's goldeneyes, and American wigeons.  Time to make a local trip once the weather gets a little nicer!

Activity 1:  Hairy woodpecker & mountain chickadee - not hard to differentiate! Activity 2:  Mountain chickadee (gray, white & black with white eyebrow), black capped chickadee (gray, white & black with full black cap & bib), hairy woodpecker (white & black with spotting) Activity 3:  Crows (walking along fences/ground), mountain chickadee (flitting around aspen branches), black capped chickadee (flitting around aspen branches) Activity 4:  Hairy woodpecker (approximately smallish robin sized, spotted black & white, clinging to/picking at tree trunks, area with old growth aspens, pines, & spruces, single "peek" call)

Activity 1:  They're not the flashiest, but I've always been fascinated by owls.  I'd love to see one someday! Activity 2:  In our neighborhood, I've seen birds from the crows/jay, titmice/chickadee, & woodpecker groups so far.  I just started birding a few months ago and am looking forward to hopefully seeing some spring robins soon! Activity 3:  My favorite birds are our resident crows/magpies.  They're fascinating to watch and listen to . . . and the crows loved our old dog and used to bring him bones!
