JohnParticipantI've seen and heard Eastern Screech Owls pretty frequently in the city of Rochester NY. I'm going to build a nest box for them, as I've heard them right in my neighborhood in the middle of the city. Have also seen Snowy Owls up by the shore of Lake Ontario, Short-eared Owls in Buckland Park and Nations Road areas, Saw-whet Owls in Braddock Bay Park, and Great-horned Owls and Barred Owls in various places. I also once saw a Hawk Owl over near Medina, NY. I especially love watching Short-eared Owls flying about silently just before dusk in winter. I hope to see a Barn Owl some day.in reply to: Who Is That Owl? #857338

JohnParticipantThis past summer in Rochester, NY I saw two peregrine flacons harassing a red-tailed hawk that was flying over. The peregrines would take turns flying about 30-40 feet above the red-tail, which was flying, and then diver bomb it. At the last second, the red-tail would flip upside down and extend its talons in the direction of the diving peregrine, which would then pull away. They did this for about 5-8 dive bomb attacks. Eventually, the red-tail flew off and settled down in a tree. Were the peregrines hunting the hawk, or trying to drive it away?in reply to: Activities: Noticing Behaviors #730439

JohnParticipantActivity 3: My favorite neighborhood bird is a Cooper's Hawk that I see pretty often. I live in the city of Rochester and I think the bird feeders people put out help feed this hawk. One day this past winter when out walking my dog, I saw the hawk pursuing a House Sparrow. The sparrow attempted to escape by landing in someone's front yard. Nope. That didn't work, as the hawk darted over, grabbed the sparrow, flew across the street to alight in a tree, and started to consume its breakfast.in reply to: Activities: Exploring Birds #729945
