LorettaParticipantThere is so much to choose from that is memorable. I would have to go with listening and knowing their calls to identify them, and ways people can help them like building nesting boxes.in reply to: Find the Hidden Owl #874941

LorettaParticipantThe sound that surprised me the most was the Bush baby. It definitely sounds like an owl. Where I live, the sounds I hear from an actual owl at night is the barred owl. I was outsidedoing this course and heard it. There is one for sure pretty close to my apartment. The other sounds I hear are bats, frogs, and a group of coyotes. They were really close and loud last night.in reply to: Is It An Owl? #874940

LorettaParticipantI absolutely love birds. From backyard birds, parakeets, parrots, chickens, ducks, and especially birds of prey like Owls and Falcons. The lifestyle of owls are similar to falcons because they are predators, eating small animals and hunting from above. They are different from birds like chickens and ducks due to the fact that they don't eat the same thing, nor do they stay in groups. They are also nocturnal and regurgitate their food instead of passing it through their bowels.in reply to: Young Owls Grow Up #874556

LorettaParticipantThe owls' prey items in this section do not really surprise me. I have always known most eat small mammals, fish, insects, rabbits, rodents, etc. Even though I knew of amphibians and reptiles, the owls in my area mainly eat small mammals. I have even witnessed one trying to pick up my friend's dog. Luckily it missed and flew off. I did have another friend who had one pick her weenie dog up in their back yard, taking it pretty high up before dropping it. The talons did do some damage, but not as bad as it could have been.in reply to: Owls and Their Prey #874552

LorettaParticipantI have always loved owls. Owls are my favorite Bird of Prey. One day I hope to be an ambassador for Birds of Prey. In 5th grade we had to do a science project where we had to dissect their feces to see what they had eaten. Mine was a mouse. After cleaning the droppings, we got to glue the bones to a piece of paper. It was the coolest science experiment I have ever done. To this day if I am in the woods, I search for droppings hoping to one day be able to do my own experiment. Besides the owls in the photos from the Renaissance Festival in Hammond, LA, I see them every so often where I live. In fact, about 2 years ago my friend, myself, and her dog were sitting outside one night when an owl actually flew down right in front of us trying to pick her dog up. Fortunately, the owl landed next to the dog missing it's target.in reply to: Who Is That Owl? #873682
