StaciParticipantI really prefer a single point rubric for assessing student work. Does the project have it, yes or no. I feel like it takes the subjectivity out of the grading process, and is more clear for students. Give the students a clear checklist, so that they know what is missing and what their score would be before they even turn it in.in reply to: Sharing Student Projects #906696

StaciParticipantI searched the eBird site. If you have an account, you can add to the database. Data has been uploaded from all over the United States, and many countries. There is location, species, and date information included. I believe the data is available to anyone, but I had an account, but it was free. I have not participated in the collection of the data, only signed up for an account and I was able to access the data. I will have to investigate whether or not students are able to access the data. But in just a quick check, I was able to see all of the different birds in my county, and I could identify which ones are nonmigratory. Students could use this data to identify which birds might be found in our school yard at different times of the year.in reply to: Data Literacy Through Citizen Science #906605

StaciParticipantThis sounds like a fantastic opportunity for them! I struggle with having my class being less structured in a similar way and how that is contrary to the culture of the rest of the school. But I figure it is better for them to leave my class longing for more than to have never loved learning at all!in reply to: Launching Investigations #906552

StaciParticipantI was super blessed to be able to participate in a citizen science experience at a dinosaur dig this summer. We were able to unearth some duck-billed hadrosaur bones and tendons. It was amazing! But one of the coolest parts was how much we felt like "real" scientists. We had to record our finding in the lab book, do sketches and measurements, make sure everything was labeled and recorded with the GPS. The timing of the dig makes it so that my students would not be able to participate in the same project, but the feeling of empowerment is what I would want to help replicate.in reply to: Symbiosis in the Soil – Classroom Case Study #906505

StaciParticipantI've always been intimidated taking kids on a nature walk, cause I don't know the names of the stuff that we are seeing. But essentially that could be a benefit, because I will not just be giving the answer all the time! I can leave it open ended, and encourage the kids to search out their won answers to these questions.in reply to: Supporting Open-ended Questions #906500

StaciParticipantIt took me a moment to process which direction the sounds were coming from. First hearing them I thought they were in front of me, but after concentrating, I believe the sound of the frogs were coming from behind me, but maybe echoing of trees. I found myself turning my head a lot to help me focus.in reply to: Encouraging Observations #906496

StaciParticipantUsing observation and experimentation to answer the questions that students have may be the most important approach to our setting. I feel that we are pretty competent about the research angle for finding information. Enabling students to find the information on their own will be valuable.in reply to: Linking Citizen Science & Inquiry #906181

StaciParticipantFirst, modeling that WE are doing science is pretty fantastic. And helping students to see that this is how knowledge is gained, by experimentation, observation, etc. can be life changing.in reply to: Citizen Science in Your Classroom #906177

StaciParticipantI have just registered for the birdfeeder watch. That will be our first. I think we also plan to do the great Backyard count in Feb. It would be fantastic if there were a chart with all of these possibilities and links in one place, with a short description of what each one does, or age its meant for! I am going from having no idea what to do, to suddenly so many options, how do I organize it all! Thanks for all this great information.in reply to: Intro to Citizen Science #906175
