TessParticipantActivity 2: Of the Seven Simple Actions to Protect Birds, I am already doing a few: minimizing plastic waste, keeping my kitties indoors, and planting native plants on my deck. I plan on starting to buy bird-friendly, shade-grown coffee and doing more citizen science going forward.in reply to: Activities: Helping Birds in Your World #947615

TessParticipantActivity 2: I've begun connecting with my local birding community by joining the Chicago Ornithological group on FaceBook and participating in the Christmas Bird Count. I plan on researching more opportunities on FeederWatch, Great Backyard Bird Count, Zooniverse, and SciStarter.in reply to: Activities: Keeping Track of Your Birdwatching #947611

TessParticipantActivity 2: For this prompt, I explored the species found at two different eBird hotspots in Arizona: Roger Road and Mt. Lemmon. Based on the waterfowl and birds found at Roger Road, I would say that this habitat is aquatic - perhaps a marsh or lake. Based on the raptors and songbirds found at Mt. Lemmon I would guess that the habitat is more forested.in reply to: Activities: Exploring Bird Habitats #947602

TessParticipantActivity 2: Using Merlin’s “Likely Birds” feature, I have chosen three species that are year-round residents in Chicago: common goldeneye, black-capped chickadee, and downy woodpecker. Each of these species I see regularly, probably every day. Additionally, I have chosen three species that only live in my area for part of the year: barn swallow, ruby-throated hummingbird, and yellow warbler. These species come in spring and leave in the fall.in reply to: Activities: Different Seasons, Different Birds #946522

TessParticipantActivity 1: Watching the Bird Cam link, I identified a nuthatch and a sparrow on my own by shape, color and markings. I did need some help deciphering which type of sparrow was on the screen, though.in reply to: Activities: Bird ID Practice #946490

TessParticipantActivity 3: I have a few favorite birds that I see in my neighborhood, depending on the time of year. I live in Chicago, and we get some ruby throated hummingbirds in the warmer months. In the cold months I watch coopers and re-tailed hawks hunt and catch squirrels and pigeons.in reply to: Activities: Exploring Birds #945276
