I haven’t taken my kit outdoors yet because it’s peak migration season here and I’m moving around too much. But I did make this journal page from a reference photo I took in the field.

KellyParticipantI really liked how this exercise pulled all the skills together. The proportion and breaking down the subject into shapes and relationships has been most helpful. The most difficult technique for me is adding value to the sketches.in reply to: Giving Your Drawings Depth #697545

KellyParticipantThis was more fun than I thought it would be. I really took my time and tackled it over a few different days and was very free with my eraser. It was a great exercise to work on seeing shapes and using negative space.in reply to: Drawing What You See – Upside Down Drawing #697217

I'm glad the course has us dive in right away and get to drawing. I couldn't quite get the tilt of the bird's head but I like drawing from photos and focused hard on not being too precious with it. I don't think I would have noticed the difference in the wing feathers as much. I also never noticed how much black striping there is on the wings, despite having photographed Yellow Warblers several times before.

KellyParticipantLike many others I decided to pick up this course while I'm sheltering in place because of COVID-19. I drew so much as a kid and it's a habit I have been trying to re-establish for years. I'm an avid birder and nature lover so I figured this was a good way to merge several things I enjoy. I really liked the example of the journaler who had the daily and then monthly spread. Daily is definitely too ambitious for me but filling a page per month seems doable.in reply to: Style Your Journal Your Way #685439
