As many have said time or deciding to allow them time for inquiry. Our curriculum is very broad, so it is challenging to allow the time for genuine inquiry. Still trying to find the right balance.

Lost ladybug generated some nice pie graphs. Milky Way project had many nice images. This information seemed available to anyone. The ladybug graphs could be used for graph reading practice.

Allow time to wonder and observe is important. I liked the steps Jenny used for their projects, the peer feedback would be helpful for deeper observation and questions.

I have done loon watch, backyard bird count, collected dna water samples for invasive fish species, monarch tagging. Often the most challenging part is the timing, many projectx need to happen certain times of the year or day, that may not coincide with your school or groups schedule. Learning outcomes have varied by project and group involved, but always observing, data collecting and communicating those discoveries are involved.

Being outside and allowing time will encourage observation. Younger children are usually curious. I think we stifle that as they age. Probably by as the earlier article stated by rewarding the "right" answer the questions, rather than by being able to ask good questions. I need to continue to ask what do you notice? what do you wonder?

I have done this campers and instead of drawing or writing what was making the sound.. they had to draw the " sound". Rachel and some others did that in their maps. It can be challenging way of listening, because we love to label and identify.

Getting them outside to observe.

All 3 would be great practices to incorporate. I would like to develop more independent reasoning in my students. Designing projects that allowed them to think globally and connect locally would be wonderful. Allowing for the unexpected I already try to do on a small scale.

Enjoyed reading about other's activities. The lab that came to mind was NY state mandated lab on diffusion. Skills include use of indicators and slide prepartion. I would say it is a confirmation inquiry. But some introductory or supplementary options could allow it to be more inquiry based. I was thinking different solutions, indicators, membranes could be available. Then I read Kristen's gummy bear lab that would be a great addition , thanks for reminding of that activity, I some use it as demonstration.

I appreciated the Myths about inquiry. It is very challenging as educators to change our mind set and practice. But if we can let students questions and observations lead to their own investigations we will help them develop skills of problem solving.
