I really like this watercolor. Now I want to paint a male Cardinal in watercolor!. Bird feet are not easy. I was given the book, Laws Guide to Drawing Birds by John Muir Laws.  JML recommends to draw 50 pairs of bird feet.

I am a 73 year old woman. Two years ago I took a course that I enjoyed, Nature Journaling with Liz Clayton on the Cornell Bird Academy site. Prior to this I didn't have any experience with drawing or water coloring. I became very interested in drawing birds and plants and fr0m then on would draw most days of the week. Last year, I took Jane's Avocet egg painting course which I really enjoyed. When I saw this course, I thought I would give it a try.  This course was very intense for me.  I have had very little training in the fundamentals of  drawing or painting. I repeated each section of this course at least 5 times or more. I really liked Bird in a Ball. I have made many, many mistakes and corrections but, I was determined to finish. Even though, this was difficult and isn't as perfect as I want, I am grateful for all that I have learned through my errors and Jane's wonderful teaching. This is as good as my painting is going to get at this point. Thank you, barn swallow painting Jane.

Your bird is dynamic. It looks like it is ready to dive down and grab an insect.

I was ready to give up on this project because the aquash brushes were so difficult to use. I didn't want to give up. Like you I painted many new parts of the bird and even new birds multiple times. I decided to try new water brushes. I bought a 6 pack of Arteza waterbrushes. Either they are very good or I am getting better at using waterbrushes. LOL

This is not an easy  project. I have had to repeat lessons multiple times to feel confident in what I was doing. I haven't even finished my painting yet. Just keep practicing and you will find it easier to do this.  Two years ago I began drawing birds and it was difficult. It took me at least an hour or more to draw a bird. An artist friend gave me a bird drawing book and the author suggested drawing a bird a day. I did this, my drawings improved and it takes me less time to draw a bird than it did two years ago. Jane's method for drawing a bird has made it easier to draw birds more accurately. I hope this helps.

I had trouble painting the scallops on the Tesia.  I then painted several birds in the ball.

I was filling the reservoir with too much water and had a similar problem. I found that if I put water to the just the fill line in the reservoir, I can manage the amount of wetness better. Also, I make sure to wipe the excess water from the brush before I put it into the paint. However, my very small round brush can be wetter than I would like it to be even after doing this. At times, I have taken to using this brush without the attached reservoir.

I think you did a great job.  It was really difficult to draw the overlapping wings. I used tracing paper and traced Jane's drawing of the barn swallow wings at least a dozen  times to get the feel of how I might draw the wings myself.   After I did this over a few days I was more confident to actually draw the swallow and wings myself.
