IMG-0198IMG-0201 It took a lot of erasing and my page is messy. My gesture drawing had some proportion issues but it did have some good negative space and angle relationships to work from.  I continue to learn how negative spaces and relationships are so important for accuracy in drawing.

Completing this exercise was really rewarding.  I see now the value of negative space much more clearly.  Concentrating on the shapes and their relationships to each other made it so much easier to draw. Really fun to turn it right side up and find a Song Sparrow!  Great lesson!IMG-0191

Measuring proportion is a real help.  I always try to visually use the head of a bird as the guide, but the additional use of the pencil as the ruler really helps.  Thinking about negative space was very helpful with drawing the feathers.IMG-0187

IMG-0178IMG-0179This is a great exercise!  The short time allowed really increases focus.  IMG-0177

@Sallie Sallie, how nice of you to comment!  You are so right, here we are with “everydays” but aren’t they stunning? I never tire of being delighted over those brilliant white spots on the Blue Jay. Chickadees are...well, chickadees, totally cheery and bold, never stopped even by the most amazing snowstorm. And Downies... they love to hang with anyone. Keep enjoying...aren’t we fortunate they allow us to watch them?!

This was really enjoyable.  I spent half an hour observing, making notes, and doing quick sketches.  Later, I referred to a Sibley bird guide to help fill in correct details to the drawings. The text was refined a bit and the boxes were added.IMG-0015
