PaulParticipantI spent some time refining the tree frog gesture drawing. Even though the original was just a bunch of scribbles, I was stoked to see it kind of captured this frog's "gesture". Anyway, I took some time and refined it using the proportion and negative space lessons a bunch. I wanted to do a before and after but I drew over the original gesture!in reply to: Giving Your Drawings Depth #658112

PaulParticipantIt was difficult. And fun. So hard not to cheat but worth it in the end. Turned out just OK but better than I thought! The head an feet looked pretty good. The wing was not so great but I rushed that part. When I took it slower and gave up on the form it turned out better. Why? My brain is not quite thinking like an artist yet. It was pretty cool to not have to concentrate on creating depth in my drawing. I was drawing flat and it turned out to have depth. Neat.in reply to: Drawing What You See – Upside Down Drawing #658026

PaulParticipantThis proportion thing is irritating - BECAUSE IT WORKS - and I'm usually too lazy to do it. But when I do it makes my drawings render more accurately. I did a freeze frame of those Red Foxes from the last lesson's video and tried the "number of heads" method and stuff looked better. It helped me realize the slender length of the parent fox versus the shorter, tighter form of the youth fox. I'm buying into measuring proportion! I also used some negative space to capture some of the interaction between the two animals. I like the way the instructor asks me to "be gentle" with myself and also to just go for it. Helpful. I've destroyed a few pages of my book but also have some that I'm proud of! I got this course as a birthday gift and it's one of the best I've ever received!in reply to: Getting the Proportions Right #658021

PaulParticipantI draw my dog too! Sometimes he doesn't move for an hour making it pretty easy.in reply to: Capturing Behavior – Gesture Drawing #658018

PaulParticipantI like those! They remind me a little of mine. Some seem to totally capture the animal's sensibility (some of mine look totally flat LOL). I've seen so many squirrels take those postures. Nicely done.in reply to: Capturing Behavior – Gesture Drawing #658017

PaulParticipantPretty fun and informative for my future sketching in the field. I was wondering how I was going to capture animals on the move and I have the beginning of a technique. My drawings turned out ok but didn't have much depth. The ones that did I am the most proud. For sure it is my biggest challenge is creating depth and perspective in my quick drawings. I love it when I "accidentally" capture the look of an animal. Here's to more happy accidents!in reply to: Capturing Behavior – Gesture Drawing #657897

PaulParticipantDefinitely helped me stay focused. My mind drifted even after a short period demonstrating my lack of focus which I need to improve. Good exercise. I learned much especially that I can actually capture some parts without looking at the paper!in reply to: Focusing on Your Subject – Blind Contour Drawing #657892

PaulParticipantI was observing and drawing on my front porch after a couple days of rain. Birds kept visiting the puddles to drink and a few of them were taking a bath! Pretty cool. I also watched a Black Phoebe catching insects.in reply to: Noticing Themes in Nature #651640

PaulParticipant1. It felt good to draw again. I found it challenging to capture the round, stout shape of the bird. I liked getting the eye with the light in it. 2. I noticed the shading around the bird's neck and head - a little darker yellow than the rest of the bright yellow. would not have noticed it without drawing it.in reply to: Jump Right in! #649700

PaulParticipant1. I started journaling after my parents gave me this course as a gift. 2. I like the idea of mixing drawings with notes. I really want to get into color so I'm going to get some watercolors at my local art store and give it a try. 3. I'm going to try some journaling at the beach watching the surfers, seals, waves, etc. After the first lesson I grabbed a sketch book dormant for years and went into my backyard. It was pretty fun watching my bird feeders and the visitors I am so used to. I watched them more closely then I have been lately.in reply to: Style Your Journal Your Way #649642
