Activity 2, I have certified my yard as a wildlife habitat by providing food (planting native plants), providing a place for them to raise their young, cover, water and I have reduced the use of pesticides in my yard. I left a dead tree in my yard and this year I had a downy woodpecker nesting in it. For the first time, I had a pair of Bluebirds nest in my nest box. The native plants I have planted provide a food source for pollinators (like caterpillars and other insects) in turn provides a food For the birds. Activity 3. I have noticed a decline in redwing black birds, scissors tail flycatchers, and loggerhead shrikes.

One of my favorite places to go birding it the rookery at UT southwestern. It is in the middle of Dallas, and it has nesting snowy egrets, cattle egrets, and more. The habitat has mature live oaks with an open area, but then it also had some dense understory, that so I can’t see the middle very well. I have been thereafter a storm and it’s interesting to see the amount of fish laying on the pathway. Where did they come from?? I can’t see if there is any water in the middle. I think one of the forks of the trinity river maybe near the area. Vs the my backyard. I have a big open grass area with raised beds that have native plants, it backs up to a green belt with tall mature tree. Not far alway is water where the egrets could eat., but they don’t nest in this type of habitat

Activity 1 - I had a downy woodpecker nesting in a dead tree in my yard. I noticed that the male woodpecker would bring insects to the babies and then fly over to my red oak tree where I had bark butter, it would take some of the bark butter to the babies. That was the feeding cycle.

@Amy Hi Amy, Thank you, The white bird is a Snowy Egret. I am in the North Texas area. There is a rookery near downtown Dallas, that I love to go to. Welcome to birding! :-)

My backyard is a certified wildlife habitat. I have a Purple Martin house, a bluebird nesting box, and I left a dead tree in my yard for the woodpeckers. This is the first time I have ever had bluebirds in my yard. I recently found a Downy woodpecker nesting in the dead tree. I have cardinals, chickadees, tiffed titmouse, mockingbirds and others. There is a coopers hawk that comes to the yard once in a while, I saw it take one of the purple martins right before the purple martin could reach the safety of the house. I love going the rookery and watching the birds. It is so relaxing to watching them building their nest and/or feeding their babies.
