I loved this whole course but I found it fascinating how they have different calls and how unique some owl sounds were. Their camo ability always impresses me. I also was surprised to hear that no owl can see in total darkness but needs a little light. I was amazed about how widespread Barn owls are. I also enjoyed the pointers on how to find owls as that is a great difficulty for me for some reason.
OH MY GOSH!! I could guess the sounds that were probably owls and most of the animals but the bobcat freaked me out a bit and impressed me. I didn't know they could sound so scary. The Short Eared Owl threw me off as it sounds so much like a cat like animal and the Spotted Owl I mistook for a dog. I have never heard a bush baby in my life so I thought it was a crow. What a fascinating sound for a primate!! As for the gray fox I have heard a red fox before so I know they sound eerie and tend to scream. A red fox screamed for days at 6 in the morning around my neighborhood, likely a vixen in heat. But like I said before I have seen but never heard a gray fox before so hearing it gave me the chills. It was like a siren mixed with an echoing scream!! I didn't know such a sound could come out of an animal however I should know better after already hearing so many strange sounds in the animal kingdom haha!
Owls are way more solitary than other birds but this works in their lifestyle because than they would be noticed more and avoided or driven off. Their sit and watch technique reminds me of flycatchers but they are able to do it in the dark which is incredible. Their secrecy is incredible! Does anyone have any tips on how to find owls especially the small ones?
Wow I didn't know so many owls ate insects and smaller creatures!! I already knew Barred Owls ate things like frogs from watching the Barred Owl cam but I didn't expect insects even for the smaller ones. The Powerful Owl must be really strong to carry a wallaby!! I have always wanted to go to Australia because they have so many unique animals. With the fish owls I would have thought they were hawks at first.
Has anyone else read the article about those Barn Owls? It is really fascinating!!
I absolutely love seeing everyones photos!! Here is my first time seeing a Snowy Owl. It was at Sachuset Point in RI. Then this little adorable Sawhet was at a owl banding workshop. She was the only one they got that night and she was beautiful.
I love owls so much!! They are so graceful and captivating!! I have seen Great-Horned, Barred, Sawhet, Screech and Snowy Owls in my birding career and look forward to seeing more. Probably my favorite is the Snowy as they are pretty rare in my area. Also the Barred Owl is a long time favorite. I can actually make a pretty convincing Barred Owl call and once called a curious one into my yard. Looking forward to more owl adventuring!!
