Activity 1.  I have always enjoyed looking at and listening to birds, but this course has increased my awareness and appreciation for the roles birds play in ecosystems by pollinating flowers, dispersing seeds, cleaning carcasses, and creating shelter for other forms of wildlife.  Activity 2. I will support forest biodiversity and birds by buying coffee that is labeled "Bird Friendly" or "Shade Grown," when possible, and grow more native plants.  Activity 3.  The Bald Eagle was on the verge of extinction due to hunting and pesticides.  The Bald Eagle has now been removed from the Endangered Species List.  Activity 4.  I took this course for entertainment.  However, this course has inspired me to continue birdwatching and include birds as subjects in my watercolor projects.

Activity 2:  It is very interesting to watch the behavior of birds at our feeder.  The House Sparrows visit the feeder in flocks.  They eat seeds on the ground and on the feeder.  Occasionally the House Sparrows squabble with other birds to protect their spot at the feeder.  The Red-bellied Woodpecker and the Downy Woodpecker enjoy eating the suet cake.

Activity 2:  Three species that are year-round residents in Illinois are the Northern Cardinal, the Blue Jay, and the American Goldfinch.  One notable feature is their colorful plumage.  Three species that are residents in Illinois for part of the year are the American Robin, the Common Grackle, and the Hummingbird.  They arrive in spring and go south in winter.  Activity 3:  Male American Goldfinch.  The bill is pink in summer and grayish-brown in winter. They are bright yellow with black wings, tails, and foreheads in spring and summer.  In winter, they are olive-brown with wing bars.  Common Loon. Breeding adults have black and white patterning, a black head with an iridescent sheen, and boldly checkered back.  Non-breeding adults have plumage that is plainer gray above and white below with a border between gray and white on the neck.  In winter, adult loons experience a full body molt.  Their eye color also changes with the season.  They have red eyes in summer and brown eyes in winter.  Activity 4:  Birds that I expect to view from my favorite spot now:  Northern Cardinal, Dark-eyed Junco, House Sparrow, Black-capped Chickadee, Mourning Dove, Red-bellied Woodpecker, Downy Woodpecker, American Goldfinch, White-breasted Nuthatch, Blue Jay, Purple Finch.  Birds that I expect to see in the next six months:  American Robin, Northern Cardinal, American Goldfinch, Purple Finch, Mourning Dove, Common Grackle, Blue Jay, House Sparrow, Black-capped Chickadee, Red-bellied Woodpecker, Downy Woodpecker, Red-winged Blackbird.

Activity 1.  The Blue Jay is a large-crested bird with a rounded tail.  The House Wren is a small bird with a flat head, oval body, and short wings. Activity 2.  The White-Breasted Nuthatch has a short tail, bluish-gray back and wings, a black cap, and a white breast.  The Black-Capped Chickadee has a short tail, bluish-gray back and wings, a black cap and chin with white cheeks and breast.  The Red-Breasted Nuthatch has a bluish-gray back and wings, a cinnamon breast with a black stripe through the eyes, and a black crown. Activity 3.  As I observed the birds in my backyard, I noted that Robins do not visit the feeder.  They enjoy searching for earthworms, insects, and berries.  The Mourning Doves search for seeds on the ground.  The House Sparrows search for seeds on the feeder and on the ground. Activity 4.  The American Goldfinch is one of my favorite birds.  The American Goldfinch is a small North American bird in the finch family.  They go through a significant change in plumage as the seasons change.  The adult males in spring and summer are bright yellow with black tails and foreheads, and black wings with white markings.  The females in spring and summer are yellowish-green with brownish-black wings with white markings.  In fall and winter, both males and females are olive-brown with dark brown wings with white markings.   The American Goldfinches love thistle and sunflower seeds.  Goldfinches are found in open areas like yards, weedy fields, and orchards.

CARDNAL CROPPED Greetings from Illinois.  My favorite bird is the Northern Cardinal.  The male is red and the female is fawn with grayish-brown tones with reddish tints.  The Northern Cardinal is a year-round visitor to our backyard feeder.  This photo was taken from my window on a snowy day.
