ChristopherParticipantGetting deep colors with lots of value was challenging, but repeated layering (and drying time between layers!) helped a lot. I also used a "stippling" technique with points of color on the tip of the brush very useful. Initial sketch and watercolor painting based on recent cover of Birds & Blooms.in reply to: Filling Your Sketches with Color #811951

ChristopherParticipantLooking at negative spaces has probably made the biggest impact in my drawing. I think switching to a harder lead may help (currently using 0.5 mm HB .. may switch to an "F" or an "H"). BEFORE:

ChristopherParticipantAlmost like paint-by-numbers... I tried drawing each shape, making sure that their sizes, proportions, and locations accurately represented how they were shown in the illustration. Very happy with the results of this exercise.in reply to: Drawing What You See – Upside Down Drawing #804898

ChristopherParticipantEasier to draw birds that are more relaxed than the twitchy birds, as I have more than a fraction of a second to make some sketches. The chickadees are too quick for me at this point, but the woodpeckers are more cooperative.in reply to: Capturing Behavior – Gesture Drawing #803620

ChristopherParticipantObservations about this exercise with the four photos:
- Really need to think about matching my drawing speed with my observation speed around the boundary of the subject.
- Trying to coordinate where I'm drawing on the physical page with the composition and layout of the subect.
- Need to concentrate on both drawing speed in both horizontal and vertical dimensions across the page.
- Have to worry about parallax with 3D objects, especially if they are close.

Getting more comfortable with this medium. I do have a question: how do you protect your pencil drawings from smearing?

Need to learn to use the watercolors.. I like them, but they're a bit messy. I think photos have an advantage in getting everything recorded at once, so no details are lost. However, the sketching process makes *me* pay attention to the details as I'm drawing them.
