I am pleased how my lessons improved this Yellow Warbler, Watercolor is my medium of choice, sometimes waiting for the paint to dry is my challenge. Therefore, taking my time, waiting until the paint dries, don't be in a hurry. I must say this little bird on July 7th took almost two hours to complete. This class has taught me many new things. I have loved nature all my live, loved to hike and backpack and put in the miles. Now - I enjoy sitting in the forest, listen to the birds, forage for edibles, take photos and attempt to paint. I have often taken my sketchbook along, usually I take a photo and draw at home. My question is - when will I sit down and actually do a plein air....? hoping to find a group to paint outside.

I did it - yeah!!! it is amazing - I remember my grandson drawing upside down when he was really little, he turned out to be a cartoonist. This is the first time I have tried something like this. I thought it was fun.

GerdaParticipantfor some reason I am unable to upload my sketches. I love the negative painting, I also went on a hike the day before this lesson and saw this ladyslipper orchid. they are protected here in the State of Oregon and Washington.in reply to: Getting the Proportions Right #821665

I had never drawn an animal before, therefore I had to stop the video to capture their gestures. I will try to draw it again like the ducks, fast and not really precise, practicing what I might see outdoors while sitting quietly! ....and just dreaming of seeing such a delightful play as the Arctic Fox.

My first try with contour drawing was an unusual experience. I decided perhaps drawing and shading the shapes while looking at them would help. So with my second try of blind contour drawing I felt it came out pretty good, except the springbok.

Observing and drawing in this class. For the hummingbird I used my limited colored Prismacolor Pencils, and the Raven is done with a variety of Faber-Castell Graphite Pencils.

I hiked in the Hopkins Demonstration Forest in Beavercreek Oregon. The terrain is steep, beautiful hiking path with many birdsongs. This is a managed forest by the county on land donated by a family. Last winter we had a tremendous ice storm that damaged many trees, so many that just the trails have been cleared, the forest is still damaged and it will take years to get it back to the way it was. I had come here in the past with the mycological society to learn about mushrooms. I sat on a stump, closed my eyes, listened and was amazed how soothing this little bit of meditation was. The flowers were not as plentiful and varied as other parts of the Cascade mountains, but this was peaceful on a holiday weekend.

I live in Oregon and love to hike in the Cascade Mountains, rarely do I sit alone and meditate. Liz inspired me to do just that and journal about it. Thank you - this was quite the experience.

I sat quietly in my converted bedroom (read studio) because it just is too blustery to sit outside. I will make it a point to go out and sit quietly by the river here in Milwaukie Oregon, tomorrow. I will bring my journal and do as Liz suggested. Looking forward to it. In the meantime - I sketched a couple of small pictures I found in these lessons.

My observing skills are improving with you directions. so far I have just used the graphite pencils, except for the clematis that I had sitting on my desk. I used watercolor pencils. Will you please give me a critique and suggestions? thanks
