I am at 9,000 ft in Summit county, CO. In July of 2023 I watched a broad tail nest being made, then 2 eggs and the chicks and then I am pretty sure they fledged . They are pretty fully grown but I was away for about a week. The nest was in a fir, about 4 feet above the ground. Then in late July of 2024 another nest was started about 2 trees away from the one a year before about 3 feet above the ground, then the eggs hatched with the little blobs of tissue for the chicks. Is it possible it was the same femaale that found its way back to the same location???????? Then, a few days later the nest was all torn up babies gone. We have magpies that hang around on the ground and in the trees, Ravens, an occassional squirrel but no racoons. What is the best gues what happened, and how best to protect the nests from predators?????
