Warblers are an exciting and colorful group of birds, but even experienced birders can find them challenging to ID in the fall. If you’ve ever spent a fall morning watching warblers and were left feeling overwhelmed or confused, this is the workshop for you! Special guest instructor Eric Ripma will help you avoid warbler overwhelm. Once you know what to look for, fall warbler identification will become a fun challenge that deepens your appreciation of warblers all the more.
In this lesson, we’ll cover 48 species of warblers that regularly occur in the United States and Canada, from the ubiquitous Yellow-rumped and Yellow Warblers to the range-restricted Colima Warbler. We’ll simplify the identification process, helping you pick out what’s critical for fall warbler ID. Then, we’ll examine look-alikes that require a special level of attention to tease apart.
This premium live workshop also comes with unlimited access to the recording and transcript, custom quizzes, and a PDF download to help you take notes.
Eric Ripma enjoys sharing his enthusiasm and knowledge with birders of all ages and experience levels—especially when it comes to ID! He began birding at the age of ten in Indianapolis, Indiana, and he birded every chance he got. Birding has led him from spectacular migratory hotspots in the Great Lakes to the Pacific coast and throughout Central and South America.
Eric has worked for numerous projects including bird banding in the United States and Belize, monitoring breeding Caspian Terns in Oregon, counting migrating waterbirds at Whitefish Point, Michigan, and conducting shorebird surveys on Louisiana’s barrier islands. He is currently a guide for Sabrewing Nature Tours, leading tours throughout North, Central, and South America. His favorite fall warbler is the Chestnut-sided Warbler.
