Since observing their droppings is the best way to find out if our backyard birds are healthy, I am very interested in learning much more about it. Any suggestion on where I can take such a course? Unfortunately, the information about abnormal droppings online is minimal, and no one in the bird groups I am in so far can give answers to my questions related to birds' dropping. Thank you!You must be logged in to reply to this topic.

Thanks for the course suggestion. I think this might be the first time it has been suggested. We only have the bandwidth to put out 1-4 full course topics per year and we typcially choose the topics receiving the most requests. However, I can certainly mention it to other departments that might want to write an article on the topic of bird droppings. There is a field/science that studies animal droppings in general called scatology. If you are in our Gardening for Birds and Wildlife course that would be a good discussion to bring up with fellow students about things related to droppings and plants, berries, bugs etc. Gardening for Birds

I think a course on bird droppings is a great idea and want to know where I can find one too! Just recently had an experience where a California Scrub Jay was leaving purple droppings near the bird bath he uses. I looked it up and found out that he could've possibly eaten something like Pokeweed berries. Sure enough, there were Pokeweed berries in a neighbor's yard. Would love to know if a comprehensive course is available somewhere!
