The Cornell Lab Bird Academy Discussion Groups Community Forum Good books or sources of information on bird evolution?

    • Just want to find out if there are others who're interested in this subject and have recommendations. So far, I've read The Ascent of Birds: How Modern Science Is Revealing Their Story by John Reilly and How Birds Evolve: What Science Reveals about Their Origin, Lives, and Diversity by Douglas Futuyma. (And I'm about to check out the chapter on this in The Cornell Lab of Ornithology's Handbook of Bird Biology.) If you've happened upon any other good sources of info, let me know. Thanks!

Hi Lynn, If you're still looking for books on bird evolution? I don't think anyone recommended "Living Dinosaurs: The Evolutionary History of Modern Birds" edited by Gareth Dyke and Gary Kaiser. It was published in 2011, so it includes the research done so far after the important bird fossil discoveries in China. It's a pretty exciting time to study evolution and phylogenetics! (Yup, that's my idea of exciting. But don't tell anyone!🐦🐦🐦) Jennifer
      • Thank you Jennifer! I'm always on the lookout for more info about bird evolution! Found an online description of "Living Dinosaurs: The Evolutionary History of Modern Birds" and am very intrigued. Looks like a great read! It's next on my reading list now. Yeah, I understand how exciting this stuff is. I'm awestruck by how long the bird lineage has been evolving.

These materials are in Chinese. I don't know if you can understand them
      • @Tisway·Li Thanks for offering! Unfortunately, I don't understand Chinese. However, perhaps there might be others seeking this information who will find this discussion thread and be able to contact you in the future for it.

Hello Lynn, it is not a book, but is a very good course online from de University of Alberta on the evolution of birds. Is free, you only need to register ( you only need to pay if you want a certificate) https://www.coursera.org
      • Thank you for this tip Mayte! I found the course you're speaking of, from University of Alberta, at Coursera. I've just now previewed it, and it looks awesome! Very interested in their theropod dinosaur origin. Many, many thanks for directing me to this.
