Upon closer inspection I saw the ball of feathers move slightly.  I was astonished to discover it was a baby Owl just sitting in the middle of the road. After quite a few phone calls, for the next hour, I found The Raptor Refuge here in New Jersey.  Someone put me in touch with a bird transporter. There was a soft blanket in the boot of my car.  Question - to pick up or not to pick up? The soft blanket seemed a safe option for both myself and the bird. As I approached her she slowly turned her head around and fixed her enormous brown eyes on me.  Love at first sight. Although I've adopted many birds I knew that this baby should not get attached to me . That she did not get run over was a miracle. The transporter drove her to the refuge where she was put in a cage with other baby owls and I was told she was doing fine and would be released back into the wild when old enough. As for me I still have a bit of sadness. But also gratitude to all the folks who helped "Penny" get to safety. B.A.M.
