Here's something I've wondered about for awhile. I've noticed that a male California Scrub Jay that I've fed and befriended tends to vocalize loudly whenever bathing. It's amusing to see this! His female counterpart, however, doesn't when she bathes. Moreover, other birds I've been feeding and befriending don't ever seem to vocalize when they bathe either (a pair of robins, a family of crows). So I'm wondering why this male California Scrub Jay would vocalize so loudly as to draw attention to himself whereas other birds I've noticed don't (and it makes sense to be unobtrusive).
- Is this phenomenon prevalent among California Scrub Jays, and the males in particular?
- For what possible reasons might they do this?
