KathyParticipantIt was interesting looking at the graphs in Activity # 3. I didn't realize how many birds pass through our area throughout the year. I have never seen a true bluebird, green heron, or loon, and hope to run across one some day when I am out and about . Walking around my neighborhood I saw crows, barn swallow, mourning doves, house sparrows, a mockingbird, and a couple others I was trying to identify with sounds. I recorded a couple sounds on my phone and checked in with the Bird ID when I got home but the recording wasn't that good, so not sure what they were.in reply to: Activities: Local Bird Exploration #728272

KathyParticipantActivity 1: I went out for a walk and saw some birds with forked tails. I was able to find them in Merlin as barn swallows. ( I had never noticed them before) I also went to the park today and saw a larger bird flying above with reddish tail feathers and identified it as a red tail hawk. I had never paid much attention to the shape of birds tails, body shape, and size before, so it has been good to be more observant of these things. There were many different birds at the park, but too far away or too fast to get a good photo to put into Merlin. I took a photo of a large black bird on the top of a tall tree. I thought it was probably a crow, but wanted to see what Merlin said- it said it was a wood duck, which I thought was funny, as there was no water around the park.in reply to: Activities: Bird ID Practice #723645

KathyParticipantI am just starting this course and really enjoy it and all the photos and info people have posted. I live on the central coast area of CA. I really like the seabirds and wading birds that we can see over by the coast ( herons, egrets, cormorants, and gulls), but with the lockdown, I've been staying around my neighborhood, inland, and enjoying seeing and hearing the garden and house birds., as I go for a walk each day. I was excited to hear what I thought was a mockingbird, though I didn't know what one looked like, and came home to look it up and sure enough, there is one nearby. A friend had given me a birdbath for my apartment patio several months ago, and I had never seen any birds come to use it until last week when a couple of little sparrows come every day to splash in it. That has been fun to watch. Activity # 1: I liked looking up info on the Puffin and Blue Footed Booby as they are unusual in coloring, and it was nice to hear the cardinal again ( we don't have them in our part of CA and there was one that used to come to the tree outside my aunt's house in Kansas when I lived there one year when she was ill, and it's singing always brought a smile to our faces.) I'm looking forward to learning more about birds, and am grateful to a friend who gifted me with this course.in reply to: Activities: Exploring Birds #702091
