Stefan Kahl Postdoctoral Fellow, Center for Conservation Bioacoustics at the Cornell Lab of Ornithology

How can computers learn to recognize birds from sounds? As a postdoc within the Center for Conservation Bioacoustics, Stefan is trying to find an answer to this question. Stefan’s research is mainly focused on the detection and classification of avian sounds using machine learning. Stefan strives to assist experts and citizen scientists in their work of monitoring and protecting our birds by developing a wide range of applications such as smartphone apps, public demonstrators, web-interfaces, and robust analysis frameworks.

Stefan will be joining our conversation from BirdNet’s partner organization, Chemnitz University of Technology in Germany. Stefan has a B.Sc. and M.Sc. in Applied Computer Science and a Ph.D. in Deep learning for Bioacoustics from Chemitiz University of Technology.
