I observed some Sandhill Cranes at work recently and did some gesture drawings of their behavior. I followed it up by sketching a sandhill crane head, and then refining and coloring it using a reference photo. It was fun to observe some of their behaviors, and coloring the bird head really helped me recognize all of the color combinations found on them, especially the eyeball
i found the springbok easiest to draw, as it felt like it had the straightest lines. My newt wasn't great and neither was my sunbird. I struggle to connect the lines back up, but I'm sure many people do
I always struggle with proportions when it comes to drawing. I think the feet look a bit small on my drawing and the head is a bit elongated. I enjoyed drawing the feathers and getting some of the smaller details in, however. I might not have noticed the small patch of gray on the nape if I had not been asked to draw it, not the extensive black feathers of the wings.
I've always enjoyed capturing aspects of nature, both through (ethically) collecting and photography. I also really enjoyed drawing as a kid, but kind of fell out of it over the years. I wanted to find a new way to capture nature, develop a new hobby, and reignite my love of drawing all at once. I really liked the idea of doing a daily sketching journal, complete with notes on what I find/see
