@Deb Hi Deb - yes, we saw the brown pelicans daily along the shore and the motmot at a nature reserve in Samara.  I highly recommend going on an "adventure trip" with a naturalist to help you see the variety of flora and fauna in CR!

I tried left to right, right to left, different starting points and even mentally counting how long a segment was in relation to others....but still had lackluster results.  Definitely something to work on.  the biggest challenge was to have the start and end points meet.

I sat at a window overlooking our backyard and our bird feeder setup.  I always enjoy seeing our bird visitors, but it was even nicer to devote 30+ minutes watching their ebbs and flows and all the variety.  That was mixed in with several squirrels still trying to figure out how to get to the good bird food.  The experience allowed me to focus on unique patterns/shapes of the birds/squirrels as well as identifying colors (such as the pink feet of a mourning dove).  I enjoyed the challenge of quick sketching also before the animal moved - and realistic postures they exhibitIMG_8950IMG_8949

I am somewhat comfortable drawing from a photo (with ongoing practice).  I find it challenging to sketch (in graphite) and capture the brightness and/or shading that colors allow in a photo.  One thing I noticed in the photo was how long the toes/claws were as well as the unexpected rust-colored streaks on the belly.  Learning about bird wing structures will also help when trying to capture complex coloring/feather patterns

I just returned from a trip to Costa Rica.  I brought my sketch book and WC paints and found much inspiration to draw/paint....however, I am most comfortable looking at a photo vs. drawing or painting en plein air.  I am hoping that this course will help to give me tools/techniques and confidence to try to sketch/paint what I see vs. a photograph of it.IMG_8925IMG_8926
