Cottontree Esplanade Park is alongside the river mouth and has many native trees.  They get lots of salt spray and sea breezes.  I chose two that looked different and sat for 40 minutes.  I was pleased I didn't feel nearly as self-conscious sitting there as I thought I might.  Also I was surprised how many differences I discovered in the detail of the trees and how looking for those differences improved my knowledge of them both.  What a great exercise! I recognised the theme "Systems and Flow" in my  sit spot and on my journal page (posted again here, sorry).  Where else do the Rainbow Lorikeets go to eat and rest in unusually cold and wet conditions?   How do they find food when it's too wet for nectar?  What food do they find?  Do these conditions cause loss of Lorikeet life? Can this be measured? Sit Spot

On an unusually  cold, wet  winter's day (11-12C) my sit spot was watching the Rainbow Lorikeets shelter on a bamboo pole we set up under shelter with some Lorikeet mix and cut up apple.  The birds were so wet, cold and tired they didn't worry about me.  It was so lovely watching them cuddle up and preen in pairs, and I was able to identify a few significant individuals, one from his injuries and others from their habits.  There were no smells that came to me but sounds and images were just lovely. I spent about one hour and had to drag myself away then! Sit Spot

Am feeling more confident committing to paper but making silly mistakes.  I still want to work on working quickly to get the concept of the shape down.   Passionfruit

It was fun creating some kind of likeness of the bird in the drawing.  It is an impression rather than a reproduction. I didn't feel confident about the drawing or the painting, in fact it is one of my first times trying watercolours and I had trouble mixing the media and confidently applying it. I am not very happy with my colours.  I also didn't feel confident about "owning" my journal page.  At first it was an empty sheet and then I put the image on it .... and then, "what will I write and where???" Regarding looking at the photo and seeing things I may not have otherwise noticed, yes and no.  I did see what was in the photo as I would have used the details for ID, however i certainly took more notice of the detail of what was there and that has re-inforced those features in my mind.  These details might be useful as notes to make at the side of drawing as I will never be able to quickly capture such details in a watercolour - not as far as I can imagine anyway!  Journal page 1
