My observation of hummingbirds in Tucson is primarily with Anna's.  They probably display more territoriality than any other birds I see in the this area.  Sometimes they can be very aggressive especially to other Anna's.

One thing I find exciting today is that we have much more sophisticated instruments to study physiological attributes. Back when I was studying ecology and evolutionary biology the use of computers was still beyond the average researcher. This was in the 80's (took me a while to get back to school).  I think the work being done at Cornell on avian physiology and the subject of torpor is certainly adding to our understanding of how animals deal with the daily challenges of survival.

Broad-billed Hummingbird 1I live in southern Arizona and we have all of the hummingbird species in the U.S. here at some time during the year (at least I think that is correct). We do get birds from norther Mexico coming across in the springtime.  Southern Arizona from New Mexico to California is a great place  to see hummingbirds.
